For example, when transporting urea, local moisture can cause the granules to stick together and harden only in certain areas of the load, while the rest of the batch remains in a normal condition. If these areas are not included in the sampling according to the applicable methodology, the formed sample will not be representative of the entire delivery. The laboratory analysis will be correct for the sample tested, but will not reflect the actual condition of the entire batch. Such discrepancies often lead to complaints and the need for additional fact-finding, which can delay the performance of the contract and develop into a commercial dispute.
Representative sampling requires not only strict adherence to applicable standards, but also professional assessment of the load in each specific case. The experience of the surveyor is decisive in choosing the sampling approach, assessing the homogeneity of the batch, identifying potential local deviations and assessing whether there are factors that could compromise the representativeness of the sample. It is this expert assessment that turns sampling from a formal procedure into a reliable tool for objective quality assessment.
